Should I Really Be Worried About Plastics?

image There has been quite a bit of press lately regarding plastics and their potential health risks. Some are good, some are bad. Make sure you avoid some while others are perfectly fine. Quite frankly I find the whole mess rather confusing and I’m starting to wonder if this something that really needs to be worried about. Is plastic really the evil material that it is being made out to be? Could this be the cause of health issues like diabetes, heart disease and hormone imbalances? I want to clear this up for me and my family once and for all!

More Housecleaning

Once again I’d like to take a quick minute to clean out some of the links to stories that I have wanted to share. Normally I’d take the time to give you my 2 cents on each of them but since I’ve fallen so far behind that most of these have become too stagnant. I may revisit some of them if they deem it necessary.

Facebook Apps Rant

image I will try to make this short and sweet. I have yet to use a Facebook application that I like. Every single one that I have installed and tried to use ends up being more of a nuisance and virus-like than anything else.

Here’s a perfect example. The other day I got a notice that a friend of mine had made some pleasant comments about me and it suggested that I “Click to see what they said about you”. So I did. As expected it wanted to install some friend rating app so I thought that for just this once I’d install it and give it a shot. Big mistake. Once installed I was suddenly inundated with worthless screens wanting ME to rate my friends. I never did get to see what my friend had mentioned about me. I just couldn’t take it anymore and promptly deleted the app.

This is not the first time that I’ve dealt with such frustrations with Facebook apps. Which is why I completely ignore all requests from friends to install the annoying bits of digital trash. No more “Birthday Calendar” requests, no more “Share a Beer” or whatever. In my opinion, 3rd party Facebook apps are usually nothing more than viruses. Leave them alone!

Thank you for your ear and patience. I will end my rant now. :)

School Kids Get Exercise Balls Instead of Chairs – Strollerderby

Hmmm, this may not be a bad idea. I visited a chiropractor a couple of weeks ago and he recommended that I use one at work (I’m in IT) and at home while I work on the computer. I have done it a number of times since then and I can tell you it’s amazing. Tiring, but amazing. I remember being in school and constantly “reclining” back in my chair or slouching over. This could really help kids learn proper posture. It’s worth a shot I guess.

Hardware Now Using Beta Model?

image It’s pretty common knowledge that software developers “release” beta versions of their products to end users so that they can test the software and provide feedback so the product can be better polished when it does finally leave the beta phase. This can take quite a long time, for example look at Gmail. It was in the “beta” phase for years. This has seem to become the standard for software development but now it seems like this has leaked over to the hardware realm.

Dell has recently released the Mini 10 netbook to join it’s siblings, the Mini 9 and Mini 12. However, as Engadget points out, you really have to wait for a while before Dell makes it available with all available features like upgradeable RAM, Ubuntu OS option, 720P display and a TV tuner. It’s basically the Dell Mini 10 BETA. Why in the world would a hardware company deliver a product that’s only half finished? It’s not like people have been demanding it so ferociously that they HAD to get it out ASAP. Consumers still had the 9 and 12 as options. It just doesn’t make sense. At least when software vendors release betas the upgrade phase to 1.0 is relatively easy. What is Dell going to do, recall all of the sold units to add more RAM or swap out the display?

Personally I find it quite ridiculous for Dell to do such a half-assed job with this but I’m sure they have their reasons. What they are I’ll never know. All I do know is that I’d rather wait until I have the full range of possible options before I shelled out any cash and considering what those options will soon be, they are worth the wait.

My Opinion Of The DTV Date Change (not that you care)

For some reason this little change in television broadcasting has really ticked me off. In case you haven’t heard, TV broadcasters across the country were going to stop broadcasting in analog and switch over to the better digital transmission. They were all going to do this on the exact same day, February 17, 2009. If you used cable or satellite you wouldn’t be affected, only those who use antennas were going to lose their signal. To help ease the switch, you could get a voucher for a FREE converter box!! And to top it all off we have been warned of this impending date for MONTHS!! There really shouldn’t be much of a surprise here. But now, in typical American/Human fashion there’s fear that not everyone will be ready for the switch. It’s like it suddenly just jumped out of nowhere and we were all so shocked by it. So Obama and others pushed for an extension of the date and actually got it. And not a little extension mind you, June 12!! Four months?! Are you kidding me?! Everything was set, ready to go. Now the lazy slugs that couldn’t actually pay attention to anything, get another four months to screw around and still not be ready. $10 says there is another date change. Thank you for letting me vent. I feel better. :)

Free Audio book: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Thanks to one of my favorite sites, Lifehacker.com, I am now the owner of a copy of this bestselling book. It’s kind of a pain that you have to go through the whole process of creating an account and installing software, but hey it’s free. I personally have only read bits and pieces of this particular book so I look forward to listening to the entire thing as soon as I can.

A Little Housecleaning

I have gotten so far behind in my posting of various links that I have found to be of interest that I thought I’d just use one post to list them all and clean them out of my queue. I’d like to talk about each one but some of these are from last summer! I feel that it’s more important to just list them out instead of waiting to talk about them all. Besides it’s better for me psychologically. Here are the old ones through November. The links since then I’d like to talk more about.
