Bedtime Sux
My wife and I have always known that children are always in a phase and it will change. Son being a total cuddler and lover? Just wait, it will change. Daughter driving you nuts with asking for new shoes every time you go shopping? Just wait, it will change. But I have to tell you, I CAN’T WAIT until this latest phase passes, with both of them!
Bedtime has become such a struggle. Both kids get tucked in so sweetly. No problems or issues. The issues really start about 10 minutes later when they decide that they don’t want to sleep. We really only have two rules when it comes to bedtime: 1) Stay in your bed and 2) be quiet. Simple and to the point. Honestly, we don’t really care if they don’t sleep since they are the ones that will be tired in the morning. Obviously being as young as they are it isn’t much of a concern that they are really going to be up all night anyway.
Apparently bedtime actually means that it is time to go to the bathroom (for the 8,549th time) or call down the stairs that they need a drink (so do I) or what ever “thing” a youngster can come up with so that they can stay awake. Now, as I said we only have two rules for bedtime, but what happens if (when) they break one of those rules?
Hmm, good question.
That seems to be the most frustrating part. No matter what consequence we come up with, it just doesn’t seem to do the trick! Most of the time we can come up with something that will help the kids make the right decision but for some reason we just can’t hit a home run in this area. It looks like we are just going to have to keep pushing ahead until this gets derailed.
This has been going on for months now so hopefully soon it goes away. Also, maybe since they are both going through it at the same time it will end at the same time too! ![]()

Dear Brad,
We have the same problem at our home and have figured that they just need little bit more cuddle time (after making sure that they had their drink and used the rest room). My kids are little older but we still lie down with them for a short while and they fall asleep. Only problem with that is that sometime we end up sleeping as well and that throws all plans of finishing up work after they sleep out the window!!
Good luck with your present dilemma. If you come up with a solution that works, please let me know!!
Best,
Uma S.
