Connecting Families Via Webconferencing
This is a quick post meant mostly for those out there who may need a little push to help them decide if webconferencing is something they would like to use. My wife and I both come from divorced parents so we have family members all over the country. I don’t have to tell you that trying to physically visit everyone just doesn’t work. It’s far too expensive and we just don’t have the time. We have incorporated Skype to help us keep connected with those we love and it works perfectly. A great example is when Grammie sends the kids a little something for Easter or just out of the kindness of her heart, we can open the package with her and she can then see the kids’ joy in real time. Considering she lives almost 2000 miles away, this is pretty amazing. We have also started using a protected Twitter account that both of us update constantly to let everyone know what we are doing on more of a micro level. It also works as a kind of diary. It’s a great help to keep our family close.
For those who don’t even know where to begin I have found a great link to give you everything you may need. It will give you a nice overview of the hardware and software that you will need. Have fun!

Skypeing is the best invention ever for long distance grandparents/grandchildren. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone setting it up for their parents so they can share more fully in their grandchildren’s lives. It fills a lot of the little holes that are left by their absence. I look forward all day to an evening Skype call. Most definately the highlight of my day. Here is a cute story – example of its importance in our family. After dropping me off at the airport after a wonderful week’s visit with my daughter, son in law and grandchildren, driving out of the airport my daughter had tears streaming down her face. My 3 1/2 yr old granddaughter patted my daughter on the shoulder and said “Don’t cry, Mommy…you can call Grammie on the computer tonight
I think that sums it all up!

Definitely a great idea, I have been thinking the exact same thing for when our little one comes to help stay in touch with everyone that we don’t get to see on a daily or monthly or even longer basis.

Excellent use of technology to keep the family close. I do the same with my mother in New York to see us and her grandchildren here in Ohio.
The key to success is simplicity. don’t get all fancy with bells and whistles. Grandma’s generally don’t want to have to download and install things to make them work. If they don’t have to sign-up for something, even better.
Also make sure that whatever service you are using, it is compatible for the computers to be used. not all are PC/Mac compatible both ways.
Being in the videoconferencing industry, ,I have it easy with a great service available whenever I need it, but the cost is nominal anyway if I didn’t work for the company.
